It seems that the name “Spello” comes from the name of ”Ispeo Pelisio”, one of Aeneas mates that was fleeing from Troy in flames: the Romans would later on changed to “Hispellum”. The certain fact is that the city has a long history and ancient origins. Like the nearby “Bevagna”, also Spello is counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy, and as well as Foligno it is part of the circuit of “Oil City”.
